Armstrong Airport

Questions about New Orleans....?

I'm doing a project on New Orleans, and had a little difficulty finding the answers to these questions: Does NO have an international airport? How cold does it usually get in the winters? Aside from hurricanes, does it rain much there? Is it humid there? If so, which season(s) are particularly bad? Are there a lot of bugs? I know some major cities (like Chicago) are very difficult to drive into (lots of traffic jams, etc). Is New Orleans like this? Is it easy to leave/enter the city on highways? Is the traffic in the city bad? Thanks!

  1. New Orleans does have an international airport, code is MSO. It's actually not IN New Orleans, it's in Metarie. I-10 is the major hiway and it gets very busy during rush-hour. Big bugs - roaches. City traffic is bad, because a lot of the streets are one ways.
  2. Does NO have an international airport? >>> Yes, The international airport's website is www.flymsy.com How cold does it usually get in the winters? >>> New Orleans has a semi-tropical climate, which means it has mild winters and hot summers. Low temperatures during winter in NOLA rarely go below freezing and the city gets enough snow to accumulate on the ground about once every 15 years. Aside from hurricanes, does it rain much there? >>> Despite the attention the city is getting on TV, hurricanes rarely strike New Orleans so they are not a significant factor in the yearly rainfall totals. The average annual precipitation (rainfall) for New Orleans is about 62 inches. Rain occurs fairly evenly through the year. Is it humid there? >>> Yes. New Orleans is built on a swampy river delta that is not far from the coast. If so, which season(s) are particularly bad? >>> July and August are the hottest and most humid months. That is why low season for tourism is during the summer for NOLA. Are there a lot of bugs? >>> The city has a mosquito control program that is very effective, so insects are not a problem in urban areas. Insects can be a big problem in rural areas, especially during July and August. The warm climate and swampy topography also mean there lots of other insects, such as roaches. Flies are NOT a big problem in NOLA. I know some major cities (like Chicago) are very difficult to drive into (lots of traffic jams, etc). Is New Orleans like this? Is it easy to leave/enter the city on highways? Is the traffic in the city bad? >>> New Orleans has morning and afternoon rush hours like most big cities. Commute time from the closer suburbs is about 30 minutes, and from more distant suburbs is about an hour. Some pre-Katrina improvement projects on Interstate 10 to the west of the city add to the congestion during rush hour, as does work still being done all over the metro area to repair damage done by Katrina. Hope that helps!
  3. the airport in New Orleans is Louis Armstrong International Airport (MSY). Winter can drop down into the thirties at night, however it is a damp cold. Summer can bring brief heavy rainstorms. It is very humid. June through early September are the worst months for heat. Traffic is not too bad. The French Quarter is the worst are for traffic.
