What can people who care do to help New Orleans and the Gulf Coast? Ten days ago, workers cleaning a house in New Orleans found a body of a man who died in the flood. He is the twenty-third person found dead from the storm since March. Over two hundred thousand people have not yet made it back to New Orleans. Vacant houses stretch mile after mile, neighborhood after neighborhood. Thousands of buildings remain marked with brown ribbons where floodwaters settled. Of the thousands of homes and businesses in eastern New Orleans, thirteen percent have been re-connected to electricity. The mass displacement of people has left New Orleans older, whiter, and more affluent. African-Americans, children, and the poor have not made it back - primarily because of severe shortages of affordable housing. Thousands of homes remain just as they were when the floodwaters receded - ghost-like houses with open doors, upturned furniture, and walls covered with growing mold.

Is it safe to travel to new orleans for mardi gras next year? I am planning a trip next year for Mardi Gras, but I have heard that New Orleans is still a very dangerous place for tourists. Would anyone who lives there or has been there recently confirm this? We are planning to go as a group and will probably rent a pair of SUV's for the trip. I am concerned that the trucks may make us targets for being robbed.

Thanks for your suggestions!

What was the original way New Orleans was pronounced? I understand the locals normally say N'orlins - Stress on the Nor. Does New Orleans still make for a fun and interesting vacation spot? My sister and I want to take a trip in late May and are thinking of New Orleans. When did George Bush become mayor of New Orleans and governor of Louisiana? I mean, if he's expected to fulfill the duties of those positions PLUS the Louisiana legislature PLUS the New Orleans city council, is he going to be collecting a pension from all those roles? And why are we paying the people actually IN those positions? Aren't they supposed to be doing the actual job of rebuilding New Orleans? Oh, I guess those are all just for show. Their main (and only) job is to point to Bush and complain. It was really funny watching the aftermath of the hurricane going through Mexico. Within hours, the Mexicans were up on their roofs, nailing things back together, repairing walls, replacing doors, fixing windows. I guess it just goes to show, while MOST normal people roll up their sleeves and get to work, there are still lots of people in America who think "the government" is going to come to their rescue and they just need to sit and wait while the work gets done for them by someone else. So pathetic. Cry me a river New Orleans. America, not just Bush, owes NOTHING to New Orleans. 2 years before Katrina even hit, there was a Frontline documentary about how unprepared they were for a major hurricane, how NO is basically a bowl under sea level, and a single breach of the levee system would be catastrophic. But, not to worry (PBS assured us), the DEMOCRAT governor and mayor were receiving hundreds of BILLIONS of dollars to reinforce the levee system and insure this would never, ever, possibly happen. Then it did happen. So what happened to all that money? Well, it turns out, they had other needs for it. More important needs. And this, somehow, is not only Bush's fault, but all American's fault? Sorry, it doesn't wash. And what happened to the very people DESERVING the blame for this catastrophe? They got re-elected. Overwhelmingly so. The true definition of INSANITY.
A devastating hurricane barrels through New Orleans. What is the most logical explanation for this calamity? 1. An all-loving all-powerful personal god allowed this to happen on his watch. If so then why? Does weather have free will? 2. An all-loving all-powerful god commanded this to happen for the sins of the New Orleans people (Pat Robertson's belief) Then why weren't all the Christians spared? 3. The universe operates on natural law with cause and effect and could care less about anything. That's why good people are not spared any more than evil people when disasters strike.
Looking for volunteer work in New Orleans? I am headed out to New Orleans late next week. My friend contacted Habitat for Humanity to do some volunteer work while down there. Why is New Orleans geting so much attention? Not to be unsympathetic, but people all over the country lost their homes in natural disasters at different times during the year. Besides just hoping someone doesn't notice what is a good alternative?

What is something interesting to do on New Years Eve in New Orleans? I don't plan on us going to one of the higher end places, just a regular middle class place. So I was wondering if there's a popular and hip champagne that's budget-friendly too. Thanks for any suggestions............

How do you basketball fans think Billy Humphrey will do at New Orleans University? Billy Humphrey, who is one of my fave bbl players is now attending the University of New Orleans. This will be a change for Billy, even with his talent, as its a smaller school with a less notable conference. However, talent is talent and Billy still has that. He also has got his head on straight this time, and that's really important! Clean comments only! For those of you not familiar with Billy Humphrey, he used to play at Georgia!
What are the golden cocoons falling off my Live Oak trees in New Orleans since August? My yard, car, driveway and deck are covered in a gold colored cocoon that seems to hang on the bottom of the leaves of my Live Oak Trees. They are everywhere, like little cotton balls and there seems to be no end in sight for their presence in my yard, under the hood of my car, inside the house, etc... What are they? I have never seen this before in 35 years of living in New Orleans. Does it have anything to do with global warming?

Has anyone participated in (green) Rebuilding in New Orleans or the Midwest? Has anyone had a good experience doing rebuilding? Would really appreciate the ideas! Have already tried the typical searches online, but it's hard to vouch for quality of the actual volunteer experience. Thanks!

How Will The News Report From New Orleans? With the mandatory evacuation of New Orleans, Even though idiot reporters won't be able to televise from there.
