What are some happening places down there? Please take this question seriously, don't reply with an answer if its not helping. I will report you because its in the rules.

What is cheap and fun to do in New Orleans? Me and my boyfriend are taking a senior trip, and are still only considering New Orleans. We're worried it won't be in our price range ($300 ish). I like seeing historical points and more the more innocent attractions. I am looking for a family-type vacation. Any fun museums around there?
How about making New Orleans the new "Venice?"? That city has the potential of being the biggest tourist attraction in the U.S. We could save the Army Corps of Engineers a lot of headaches by just letting Mother Nature have her way and flood the streets; making Canal Street a truism. Two hundred years from now, you'd have people sitting in a bar on Bourbon Street saying things like, "My ancestors lived here when the city was dry."

Please list the prices for any events listed. I'd prefer answers from people in the area who are familiar with the "jazz" scene. Thanks

How much money would 4 people need for a road trip from Pittsburgh to New Orleans? We are 2 couples in college. We are trying to estimate how much money each of us would need for this trip. It will be a spring break trip that could take up to a week. We're driving a 2009 Ford Fusion from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to New Orleans, Louisiana. We figured we'd split the drive there into 2 days to stop in the way. We need an estimate for everything considered. We don't plan to starve ourselves and we'd like to stop at the occasional good restaurant and attraction. We estimate the New Orleans hotel to cost us $40-$50 from what we found online. We figured anyone with road trip experience could help us out. Tips on saving money would help too!
What can I do in New Orleans? I'm staying for about four days (part of Sat., Sun, Mon, part of Tues.) Any must-see attractions?

Also suggestions for unique must-see places in New Orleans and Baton Rogue are welcome!! Thanks!!
Visiting New Orleans with the kiddies? I'm visiting New Orleans for about a day...maybe two with my kids, all teens. We want to show them some of the interesting sites but being that they're kids they wont be all too interested in the WW2 museum or the like. Too much like school i suppose lol. What would you all recommend, specifically, that we should definatly check out? Of course we want to eat at some point in the day but I've read about most of those must see places...I'm looking more for things like sites or attractions, like the wax museum or the zoo? Any other cool places? Hidden secrets or little known places would be nice to hear about :)
Voodoo, ghosts and pirates! Is Cajun country, New Orleans, really still a spooky, authentic creole enclave? Or is it just a sprawling city like many others? That is to say, is the place steeped in a Caribbean/Cajun/Creole vibe and some genuinely interesting voodoo history, or is the voodoo stuff nothing more than a tourist attraction from a long forgotten past? I heard the Voodoo temple was really just a shop on one of the main streets.
Is it okay to take kids to New Orleans/Biloxi? We are thinking about heading to Biloxi and New Orleans this year for our family vacation. Is there a lot for kids to do? Our girls are 3 and 7 and we want this to be fun for them. I know Biloxi has casinos, and they used to offer child care centers, do they still have these? When I am searching online, I can't tell if some articles were written before or after Katrina. I know the Grand had a kid's quest, and there were kids activities at some of the other casino/hotels. What kind of attractions are in that area or nearby that the kids would enjoy? Also, can you recommend a good and affordable hotel? My boyfriend wants to stay in one of the casino hotels. Don't worry, I definitely would not take my kids to Bourbon Street!
Which hotels are safe and affordable in New Orleans? A friend and I are traveling by car from MI to New Orleans in December. We want to stay in a safe location, and in a place that isn't too expensive as we are both college students. Does anyone know of great places to stay that are cheap and possibly close to attractions/things to do? We've searched sites like hotels.com to get an idea, but we are looking for some more direct insight. If anyone can give us hotel info, area info, things to do, or forewarnings about bad things, that would be great! Thanks
Road Trip Suggestion: NYC to New Orleans? Hi, we are planning a road trip NYC to New Orleans for Christmas & New Year. Definitely going to pass thru South Beach along the way. So, we are looking for suggestion for local attraction and "must eat this while in town" places along the way. Use Google maps to see our route. As long as its within 10-15 miles off the route we will stop by and try it out. We watch shows like Bizarre Food & Man Vs. Food. Which represent local chows that are good and not fine cuisine price. Since we are in the age range of 25-30, we would like to find out about the happening night life and places we can visit along the way as well. Any suggestion will be much appreciated. Thank you.
Is September 27th - 30th a good time to take a trip to New Orleans? ? I'm planning on taking a trip to NO on September 27th. This is the only time I have available for the trip, so I can't go in October or during Mardi Gras. People are telling me that it is a bad idea to go at this time of year though, especially in the wake of hurricane Gustav. I thought the town wold be back up and running by the 27th and they'd be pleased of the tourism, but many friends insist otherwise, recommending I take a break elsewhere, like Chicago, Boston or Miami. Will New Orleans be battered and unpleasant to visit at around this time? Will the tourist spots, tours and attraction still be open? Are the bayous worth visiting at this time of year? Or should I go elsewhere? Thanks
In New Orleans for 4 days! The MUST eat and see !!!? I AM GOING TO NOLA this weekend for four days!!!! So exited! But don't want to waste any time! :) PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, tell me what do I absolutely have to try (food, drinks, deserts :) and what to see. We are definitely going to see major attractions, but i want some inside info :) I don't eat farm meat (bird too), but I do eat anything that comes from the ocean/water. Thanks! PS, any other advice/suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!
Does anybody know the secret hotel in New Orleans on bookit.com? Details: The AAA 4 Diamond Award Winning Mystery Hotel allows for quick access to both the excitement of Bourbon Street and nearby downtown attractions of Harrah's Casino • 4:00 PM Check In • 11:00 AM Check Out • Number of Rooms: 500 • Number of Floors: 12 • Renovations: Renovated • Renovation year: 2005 http://hotels.bookit.com/louisiana/neworleans/4starluxuryfrenchquarterhoteloncanalstreet/ I am planning on going to NOLA to help with the rebuild effprt and was going to spend a few days rewarding myself in a nice hotel- I am hoping this could be the one...
Husband and I taking a trip to new orleans soon, suggestions? Mardi Gras is this week, but I was curious when all of that would have wrapped up and been cleaned up as well because we'd like to go for a weekend trip in the next few weeks. What places should I absolutely eat at, and what to get? What are the best and most affordable places to shop? What attractions are a must see? And also any good advice overall. We are military and plan to stay at the bases hotel and drive in, so recommendations on safe places to park would also be nice. We're looking for tons of fun, without spending tons of money :) Oh is everything really far apart, so i should expect to walk forever far distances? Thanks so much!!

How can I theme a bedroom around Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean? I'm doing this kid's bedroom, and he wants it themed around Pirates of the Caribbean the ride. He's 16 years old, and a HUGE Disneyland-fanatic. he doesn't want something corny or childish, but he wants to go all out. He wants an authentic, real-deal sort of room. The room is large rectangular and has vaulted ceilings. He also wants it to be a little reminiscent of New Orleans Square. The painting job is already done, it's a tan base and it looks as if a pipe broke or something, cuz it appears to have water just pouring down and damaging the walls. He has a nice keyboard, and said he'd like that to be dressed up a bit more pirate-y. It has light oak panels which deters from the look he wants. He has the PotC attraction poster, but would love more posters. I told him about Disney's print on demand system, and he was very excited, but what print(s) should I get? The room is spacious, and he hates it. He wants it to be like the ride, where you never see the same thing twice. very busy! oh ya, he wants a desk as well (he's an artist). He said either a bar look, or whatever... Just something he could doodle on or write or jazz like that. Thanks for your help!
What Disneyland paintings are in the computers at Disneyland? Ok, so my friend is going to Disneyland, CA soon, and since I'm not planning to go for another year, I want him to pick up a painting or some kind of poster for me. So my question is, in the computers at the Disney Gallery and at the World of Disney store,(where you can pick posters and size) what options do I have to choose from? What I'm looking for is a concept painting or poster of New Orleans Square or anything in that area. I'm mainly interested in posters of the Blue Bayou Resturaunt or of the Streets and buildings of New Olreans Square, something that looks like a painting (I'm at a loss of words now! I can't think of any other way to describe it!). I already have the attraction posters for Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion. So if you could give me an internet site that had the options listed, or if you could send me pics of them (cap10hook72@yahoo.com) I would greatly appreciate it! THANKS! Is it normal to have attraction with opposite race ? I always had this attraction for black woman . Since i was in 3 or 4th grade and this black girl monigue use to twirl her fingers through my hair while she sat behind me in class, lol. I went to like 90% black schools in new orleans and was raised in foster care so most of the people around me were black and it didnt matter cause it was all I knew I guess. I like white girls but I look at black woman differently . They dont always look back the same way lol . I hear you cute for a white boy but its hard for me relationship wise. white girls tend to find me brash and they say I talk different. I try to explain im me and I dont pretend its my accent and I cant change it. My friends joke you not white u a black man trapped in a white man body, but deep inside I hurt. Cause im not accepted by both races sometimes. I been with several black woman intimately ,like 17 or so, but im 29 so thats normal . do you find it abnormal to feel this way? any suggestions? yes i been with some white girls too under ten though but they are cool too, I kinda lower the number on the black woman , it was fairly high and I didnt want to seem like some freak . which i am lol thanks for the honest answers its nice to know we still got good people in the worls umm white girls i been with was total of ten , not under ten just to clarify that, so read it correctly lol man i better proof read for now on
Does anyone know of any great small town or cities (that isn't too touristy) in both florida & luisiana? I'm taking my vacation and I want to go somewhere that isn't very "touristy" I don't care for tourist attractions. mainly a nice quiet beach that I can relax and read a book w/o all the noise and distractions that orlando & new orleans has. Can anyone help me????
Which Southern cities are your favorite? Least favorite? Why? Texas, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida (geographically it's Southern but otherwise...), South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia. These states are considered Southern, as are their cities. Some people call West Virginia southern. I'm not so sure I agree with that. No part of Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, or Delaware can be considered Southern in any way. My picks: -Favs: Galveston, Austin, San Antonio, Ft. Worth, Memphis, Nashville, Mobile, Southhaven, MS -Okay: Knoxville, Clarksville, TN, Jackson, MS, Dallas, Houston -Not-so-favs: Louisville, Lexington, Orlando, Northern Virginia, New Orleans -My favs: they're my favs b/c of the natural beauty, attractions and people -Okay: these cities have a lot to offer but just doesn't suit my personality. I have nothing against them, though. -My not-so-favs: these cities are beautiful (in some ways, at least,) but the people can be pretty rude.
Staying on Canal St... how is the area?? My boyfriend & I will be in New Orleans Halloween time, & we booked a Marriott on Canal St. Can anyone give me info as to how that area is? U.S. Road Trip...where and what to eat? I am planning a motorcycle road trip through the US. I have a map of the US and pin-pointed places I know I would love to stop and see. I need some help from everyone. 1. Is there anything in the state/city you are from that you would recommend me seeing? i.e. state and national parks, monuments, buildings, attractions, or stuff I just have to see 2. I'm looking for food. So is there any kind of food your city/state is famous for? i.e. Baltimore - blue crab, Philly - cheese steak subs, Kansas City - BBQ, New Orleans - gumbo...

{Days 22&23} BHM Appreciation Thread...Important cities? Today, examining cities that have had some importance in black history….no real question, but feel free to comment on anything. Atlanta: Blacks becoming a major force in Atlanta after the Civil War. In the late 1800’s, almost half of the residents were black, yet the city remained in racial turmoil. In 1915, ATL became the headquarters for the KKK, and during the 1960’s Martin Luther King Jr. emerged as the leader of the civil rights movement, bringing more historic importance to the city. The MLK Jr. National Historic Site has helped make Atlanta a big tourist attraction for those interested in Black History. Birmingham: this city was added to the Black History books in 1963, when four young black girls at Sunday school were killed by a bomb at the 16th Street Baptist Church. Riots soon erupted, and it was there that Martin Luther King was jailed for anti-segregation protests. Birmingham’s first black mayor, Richard Arrington helped create a historic district devoted to the civil rights movement. “The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute”- museum and research center, opened in 1992. Boston: By 1700, Boston had an active abolitionist movement. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts abolished slavery in 1783, and by the 1830’s, Boston had become the center of American Abolitionist sentiment Detroit: The Great Migration double Detroit’s black population from 6,000 in 1910, to 120,00 in 1930. By way of the auto and other industries, a black middle class developed, creating an important cultural community. In 1930, W.D. Fard founded the Nation of Islam. In the 1960’s, Motown Records pushed many leading black performers to stardom, ie: Diana Ross, Jackson 5. Today, Detroit is more than 75% black. Harlem, NY: this city was the political and cultural center of African American life in the 20th century. The completion of Lenox Ave. subway made commuting to lower Manhattan easier, Blacks (many from the South and West Indies) began moving in. Black culture flourished during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920’s and 30’s, led by the likes of Marcus Garvey, and other intellectuals. By 1960, what was left of Harlem was a poor community struggling with various social issues, still going on today. Memphis: Beale St., which stretches along the Mississippi River, was the center of the Blues in the earlier part of the 20th century. With the Jim Crow laws in effect, Blacks migrated to Beale St., which was a thriving location of black businesses. Memphis is home of the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. Montgomery: This city represents a milestone in the civil rights movement. Famous for Rosa Parks’ refusal to give up her seat on a bus, what followed was a boycott of the city’s segregated bus system by 17,000 black residents, this would help launch the civil rights movement. The 1965 Selma-to-Montgomery March helped created the momentum that passed the Voting Rights Act of 1965. New Orleans: By the Civil War, light-skinned blacks called Creoles (descended from French & Spanish settlers, and African slaves) had created a healthy middle class community. A lot of creoles were educated and lived apart from black slaves. The slaves, kept alive vestiges of African culture by performing traditional songs and dances. The Jim Crow laws classified Creoles as blacks and barred them from white institutions. They were forced to mix with Blacks, the fusion of these cultures gave birth to Jazz and Blues, giving New Orleans the reputation for being one of the most musically creative cities in the U.S. Then of course Hurricane Katrina in 2005, forced most of the citizens to relocate, those left behind had no power, food, or drinkable water. There is currently no plan to rebuild some of the large scale structures in the city. Nicodemus, Kansas: As Reconstruction came to an end in the 1870s, Many Black southerners feared they’d lose their civil liberties. Known as “Exodusters”, thousands fled to new black towns, like Nicodemus, which was promoted as “the Promised Land”. In 2 years, the community had 700 residents. Bad Weather + crop failures + Union Pacific Railroad’s decision to bypass the town = end for Nicodemus, it was soon deserted. The historical importance, communities such as this offered African Americans opportunities that were very rare in the 19th century. Washington DC: A frequent stop for runaway slaves, many Blacks came to this area after the Civil War. By 1960, the city had a majority black population. The presence of black political organizations, and large marches in the 60’s, made Washington a major center of the Civil Rights Movement. Today, it is one of the largest and most prominent black-dominated communities in the United States. Info for todays thread courteous of infoplease.com/bhmcities
On Criminal Minds...? I Googled Criminal Minds and went to Wikipedia; The site initially stated that it had been renewed for another season, but after I read: Det. William LaMontagne Jr. Played By Josh Stewart. FIrst seen in 2x18 ("Jones") as a New Orleans detective investigating a serial killer. The killer was discovered by his father, who was unfortunately killed in Hurricane Katrina and he then headed the investigation. LaMontagne called in the BAU to assist him in the investigation which was ultimately successful in capturing the woman killer. In this episode we first see the attraction between JJ and Will. The relationship is then confirmed in 3x16 ("In Heat") and it is seen that they have been involved for over a year. In 3x17 ("The Crossing") we discover JJ is pregnant; in the series finale ("Lo-Fi"), we discover he is willing to give up his job to raise the baby with JJ, and that he has asked her to marry him. So now I'm not sure... So did the series end or not?

Seattle NON-TOURIST attractions? My boyfriend just moved to Seattle and I'm flying out to visit him for 5 days next week. What are some must-see and must-do attractions that locals swear by? I mean, I already know about the Space Needle, Pike Place Market, 5th Avenue, etc., but I want the nitty-gritty real-deal. (I'm from New Orleans, so I know what it's like to have everything you know and love about a place bastardized, commodified, packaged, and sold to ignorant tourists as "culture".) Just as Bourbon Street isn't the real New Orleans, I expect that the Space Needle isn't what's going to give me a real Seattle. Any local's suggestions would be much appreciated!

Can you guess who wrote this article? "If conservatives don't want to be seen as bitter people who cling to their guns and religion and anti-immigrant sentiments, they should stop being bitter and clinging to their guns, religion and anti-immigrant sentiments. It's been a week now, and I still don't know what those "tea bag" protests were about. I saw signs protesting abortion, illegal immigrants, the bank bailout and that gay guy who's going to win "American Idol." But it wasn't tax day that made them crazy; it was election day. Because that's when Republicans became what they fear most: a minority. The conservative base is absolutely apoplectic because, because ... well, nobody knows. They're mad as hell, and they're not going to take it anymore. Even though they're not quite sure what "it" is. But they know they're fed up with "it," and that "it" has got to stop. Here are the big issues for normal people: the war, the economy, the environment, mending fences with our enemies and allies, and the rule of law. And here's the list of Republican obsessions since President Obama took office: that his birth certificate is supposedly fake, he uses a teleprompter too much, he bowed to a Saudi guy, Europeans like him, he gives inappropriate gifts, his wife shamelessly flaunts her upper arms, and he shook hands with Hugo Chavez and slipped him the nuclear launch codes. Do these sound like the concerns of a healthy, vibrant political party? It's sad what's happened to the Republicans. They used to be the party of the big tent; now they're the party of the sideshow attraction, a socially awkward group of mostly white people who speak a language only they understand. Like Trekkies, but paranoid. The GOP base is convinced that Obama is going to raise their taxes, which he just lowered. But, you say, "Bill, that's just the fringe of the Republican Party." No, it's not. The governor of Texas, Rick Perry, is not afraid to say publicly that thinking out loud about Texas seceding from the Union is appropriate considering that ... Obama wants to raise taxes 3% on 5% of the people? I'm not sure exactly what Perry's independent nation would look like, but I'm pretty sure it would be free of taxes and Planned Parenthood. And I would have to totally rethink my position on a border fence. I know. It's not about what Obama's done. It's what he's planning. But you can't be sick and tired of something someone might do. Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota recently said she fears that Obama will build "reeducation" camps to indoctrinate young people. But Obama hasn't made any moves toward taking anyone's guns, and with money as tight as it is, the last thing the president wants to do is run a camp where he has to shelter and feed a bunch of fat, angry white people. Look, I get it, "real America." After an eight-year run of controlling the White House, Congress and the Supreme Court, this latest election has you feeling like a rejected husband. You've come home to find your things out on the front lawn -- or at least more things than you usually keep out on the front lawn. You're not ready to let go, but the country you love is moving on. And now you want to call it a whore and key its car. That's what you are, the bitter divorced guy whose country has left him -- obsessing over it, haranguing it, blubbering one minute about how much you love it and vowing the next that if you cannot have it, nobody will. But it's been almost 100 days, and your country is not coming back to you. She's found somebody new. And it's a black guy. The healthy thing to do is to just get past it and learn to cherish the memories. You'll always have New Orleans and Abu Ghraib. And if today's conservatives are insulted by this, because they feel they're better than the people who have the microphone in their party, then I say to them what I would say to moderate Muslims: Denounce your radicals. To paraphrase George W. Bush, either you're with them or you're embarrassed by them. The thing that you people out of power have to remember is that the people in power are not secretly plotting against you. They don't need to. They already beat you in public.
Best city to take a day trip? Okay so here are the specifications. I will fly in for the day in the AM and then fly out the same night. I will have $50 and want to have a great day. So the city must have an airport and adequate transportation. I will have only $50 to include transportation, meals and attractions. It can be done. Tell me where I should go and what I should do. If possible include transportation favorite eats and things to see. And not NYC, New Orleans or Baltimore. I have already done those cities in a day and had a great time. I want to try something new! The flight is already taken care of so the $50 is on top of that. Thank you!
