How do you calculate the 13% sales charge added to New Orleans Hotels? I'm going to New Orleans in a couple weeks for Mardi Gras! I have already paid for my hotel in full but the confirmation says I have to pay 13% sales tax and an occupancy tax. I'm not from America, I live in the UK and don't know US taxes. Is that 13% of the total room rate or something else? How is it calculated? The occupancy tax is $1 per night. The room rate was $279 per night.

Is there anywhere to park near my New Orleans hotel? I'm going to New Orleans at the end of June, and staying in the Hotel St. Pierre. We were not originally planning to rent a car, but now we think it would be best because we'd like to do some driving around the southern states that are not that far away. Our hotel has a very tiny parking lot, but I've heard it's a crap shoot as to whether a spot can be found, or not. Do any of you locals know if there is any parking nearby our hotel that would be safe to leave a rental car?

Ok, the Saits are playing a home game that same night and freakin Jounrey is playing a concert there too. What are some good hotels near Bourbon St. in New Orleans? I'm thinking about taking a trip down to New Orleans soon with some friends. I'm looking for hotels on or near Bourbon Street or in close proximity to the bars. Also, I'm looking for cheap, but clean and good hotels. The hotel must be in walking distance of the bars on Bourbon. I heard about the Hotel St. Marie online quickly. It's pretty cheap, but is it bad? safe hotels in new orleans area? advice? My 18 year old cousin and I are driving through New Orleans this Saturday. We will just be there one night. I've been to New Orleans before but always with my parents, brother, etc. We always stayed in a quiet hotel on the edge of the French Quarter, but this time since we are two young single girls I think it might be best to stay outside of New Orleans. Once before, I stayed in Metairie but I see online there is a lot of construction and things are a bit of a mess there. I guess I'm looking for a bit of advice... 1) Is it safer to stay somewhere like Metairie since we are traveling along? 2) Is Metairie a good place to stay right now or should we avoid it because of the construction (we'll be pressed for time the morning we leave) 3) Would I be better off a little further down the road... like Kenner? Never been through there before and don't know much about it. My main concern is safety. Besides that cleanliness and affordability! Any advice or suggested hotels would be great! Thanks!!!

How do I get a decent hotel reservation for mardi gras in new orleans? I thought I was starting early enough by looking now, but all the french quarter hotels are either booked or you have to stay there for a certain number of nights. Is there a secret to getting into one of these places? Or should I just go to a travel agent and see what they can come up with? Also, if I do end up in a hotel that isn't walking distance, is it realistic to think that I will be able to take a cab to bourbon street and then back home?
Hotels about 30 miles west of New Orleans...safe area? I have no reservations yet, but don't mind driving into New Orleans if traveling from a safe area. Is this a good idea? I'm also interested in *free parking* for my rental car. Due to limited budget, I don't want to pay $40/night for valet. Is this still possible in town? I also have a map of New Orleans. What areas exactly should I avoid? I can 'x' them off. Thanks.
